Screen Shot 2015-10-26 at 8.13.16 PMBirdie Kim was born Ju-Yun Kim 26 August 1981 in Iksan, South Korea and was the silver medalist at the 1998 Asian Games. Birdie then earned the 1998-99 Korea Junior Championship title and from 1998-2000 was a member of the Korean National Team. She won a total of 19 tournaments in Korea as an amateur. In 2001, she came to the United States and joined the Futures Tour. In 2004, her rookie season on the main LPGA Tour, she made three cuts in 20 events, and retained her tour card by finishing tied 12th at the Qualifying School.

The highlight of her professional career was winning the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open at Cherry Hills Country Club. In the last round, she was tied for the lead on the 18th hole. Her second shot found a green-side bunker. She holed out from the bunker to take the lead and ultimately won by two strokes.
